Schedules for the 2010 host communities:
Wednesday
6 p.m. - Join the Chautauquans to meet, mingle, and get a preview
of the exciting events for the upcoming week! (see local schedule for
details.)
Thursday through Sunday
Take a step back in time to the 1930s each evening, as famous
figures take the stage to share their bright dreams with the audience.
Come with questions to ask the speakers–in and out of character–at
the end of their presentation.
Thursday
7 p.m. - Will Rogers begins the evening with his observations, rope
tricks, and down-home humor.
7:30 p.m. - President Franklin D. Roosevelt chats about his New Deal programs
and his hopes for the nation’s future.
Friday
(Descriptions below do not apply to Colby.)
6 p.m. - Watch the Youth Chautauquans present first-person portrayals
of local historical figures.
7:30 p.m. - ”Aimee Semple McPherson, the charismatic founder of The Foursquare
Church, will recount her pioneering work in the church and on the radio.
Saturday
(Youth Chautauqua performances are at 6 p.m. in Colby.)
7 p.m. - Enjoy a recreation of a radio show by a local theater group
or live musical entertainment (see local schedules for details.)
7:30 p.m. - Zora Neale Hurston, Harlem Renaissance author and folklorist, will
discuss her efforts to preserve African American folklore.
Sunday
7 p.m. - Will Rogers returns to the stage to offer his final observations
(and maybe a rope trick or two).
7:30 p.m. - Meet Louisiana Senator, and former governor, Huey Long. The
larger-than-life politician will outline his plan to make “Every
Man a King.
Kansas-Nebraska Chautauqua explores the lives, hopes, dreams, and history of the
Chautauqua Movement from the 1930s, also examining the lives and contributions of several important historical figures.
